What book are you reading right now?
I’ve just finished reading Matthew Perry’s autobiography “Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing” which he only published quite recently. Definitely not more than three years ago.
I really enjoyed it, because even though a lot of it is very funny, Matthew was also incredibly honest about his addictions to alcohol and drugs. Anyone who is that honest with their readers gets my respect.
He truly believes that his mind is out to kill him, definitely the part that wants him to drink and use all the time, which is understandable. Feeling like a part of your own brain, your own body, is out to get you ALL OF THE TIME is confusing to say the least!
He even says that he’d give up all the money, all of the fame, in a heartbeat, if it meant not having to live with his addiction. He tried so hard to get clean, and he achieved it for months, even years at a time, but it was always there, in the background, waiting for it’s chance to take over again.
I know how that feels. I pray every day for help to have the strength to not use, just for today.
Sometimes I achieve this, usually I do. But it’s by no means something that I can take for granted.
I would recommend this book to everyone. Even if you were never a big fan of Chandler Bing, or Friends itself, because this book is about so much more than either of those things.
